What bird is that? This session introduces concepts and theories to identify birds in the field. Skills will be developed to better understand size and shape, color patterns, and behaviors. In addition, this class covers optics and how to choose the best gear to enhance your birding experience.
In some ways, birding has never been easier due to the abundance of quality resources. In this session, we introduce books, apps, and websites that support birders in their pursuits to find more birds. A detailed look at eBird will show attendees how citizen science is supporting broad goals – from conservation efforts to growing life lists.
Understanding anatomy and plumage is a useful skill for identifying birds. This class explores anatomical structures for which many birds are named (White-crowned Sparrow, Red-vented Bulbul, Red-naped Sapsucker, etc.). It also looks at the confusing world of plumages and how feathers may differentiate sexes, ages, and seasons.
A thorough field guide for the state of Ohio lists more than 300 bird species, but finding each one is more complicated than walking into the backyard with binoculars. This session examines residents, migrating visitors, rare vagrants, and how those journeys are affected by habitat, food sources, and weather. In addition, bird feeders and patch birding are covered as a way to enjoy feathered friends at home.
If birding had a superhero, their power just might be ‘birding by ear.’ Learning songs and calls is one of the most effective strategies for discovering and identifying birds. This intimidating task is broken down into simpler strategies, and game-changing resources are explored in this class.
Many birders find sparrow and warbler identification to be challenging - “They all look the same!” In this class, identification skills are leveraged to streamline the learning curve for these two families. Strategies and protocols are presented to raise confidence and joy. Birders will leave this session excited and prepared for spring migration.
Over the summer, I traveled from Florida to Maine discovering the terns of the eastern United States. This adventure included twelve terns including ABA rarities like the Code-4 White-winged Tern and Code-5 Large-billed Tern. It was fascinating to take a deep dive into a single family of birds. Here, I compare and contrast the terns and document my adventures to see each species.
As a twelve-year-old birder, it feels like I have an eternity to see the birds of North America. Yet the reality is that many bird populations are declining, making the quest to see them more urgent. When I first read Joe Lowe’s article, 'The Five Rarest Birds of the Continental U.S.,' it felt like I had found a treasure map guiding me toward future adventures and amazing birds. In this talk, I explore these species, their challenges, conservation efforts, and my personal journeys to see each one.

This presentation unlocks a birder's potential to design trips and see more birds. In today's world, it has never been easier to explore data and engage with resources that direct us towards our target species. Not only will this presentation explore the use of field guides, apps, and eBird, it will show how these tools were used to build an eight-day "weird chicken" trip through Kansas and Colorado to see birds like ptarmigan, prairie-chicken, grouse, and others.
Here, I describe the research and production of a neighborhood field guide to inspire my community to birdwatch. In addition, I show how to improve neighborhood habitats with feeder stations, brush piles, window collision tape, and removal of invasive plant species.
